In poll 29, we go back to the wide receiver position. We've had a particular focus on WRs this year, allocating 14 polls on the position and covering 45 players in our boot camp. With poll 29 we officially crack a probability of getting all correct at less than one in a quadrillion (randomly guessing).
This time last year Miles Austin was the #59th WR selected on average in drafts and the #54 WR prospect in magazine rankings. After exploding for 1,300+ yards and 11 TDs Austin now comes into 2010 as the 4th best WR on average in magazine rankings. He only had five catches for less than a hundred yards through the first month of the season. However, after a 10-catch, 250-yard game in week 5 at Kansas City, Austin was likely one of the key free agent scrambles in your leagues last year. Austin quickly reached elite levels. Projecting his last 12 games over a 16 week season is a would-be season of 114 receptions 1859 yards and 15 TDs. Austin gets the benefit of a quarterback that likes to look downfield. Romo has averaged 12.7 yards per completion over the last three years, the highest of any quarterback in the NFL. Austin averaged a beefy 16.3 yards each time he caught the ball last year.
There is no denying the elite talent of Larry Fitzgerald who is one of those rare triple threats who can be a strong possession receiver, a deep threat and is also a deadly red zone receiver. While Fitzgerald, who will be just 27 when the season starts, declined from back-to-back 1400+ yard seasons in 2007 and 2008 to 1,092 in 2009 he averages 98 receptions per season over the last three years and is coming off a career-best 13 TDs. At his best, who can forget the historic performance Fitzgerald had in the 2008 playoffs, helping lead Arizona Cardinals to their first-ever Super Bowl. Over those four playoff games, he caught 30 balls for 546 yards and 7 TDs - projected over a 16-week season is an un-worldly-like 120 receptions 2,184 yards and 20 TDs. The concern of course for this year is going from legendary QB Kurt Warner to Matt Leinart.
Joining Anquan Boldinas this year's prime off-season acquisition, Brandon Marshall moves on from Denver to Miami after four seasons as a Bronco. Miami gave up a 2nd round pick in the 2000 draft and a 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft to acquire Marshall's talents and on the same day inked Marshall to a 5-year, $50M contract. Marshall comes into the season with a streak of 100+ receptions in three straight years, one of only five players in the history of the NFL to do so. In Miami, Marshall will be paired up with 2nd-year starter Chad Henne; over weeks 13 to 16 last year Miami passed on over 60% of their plays, perhaps signaling a plan this year to open up the playbook more. Inside the opponents' 20-yard line last year, Henne had 11 TDs to 1 INT posting a 94.8 QB rating.
