The 2010 Speed Bump Challenge has reached its final showdown. As is the case each year we've included the great Peyton Manning and this year the Peyton Manning Poll will feature Peyton versus Tony Romo and Matt Schaub. With the 30 polls we've covered 106 players, nearly nine full rounds of players (12 team leagues). In total, each of the 32 NFL teams were represented in the polls with Arizona, Chicago and Indianapolis leading the way with six players each. The probability of getting all 30 polls correct (random guessing, the literal number of possible combinations) is less than one in four quadrillion or to be exact one in 4 quadrillion, 226 trillion, 892 billion, 64 million, 358,400. Thank you to everyone for joining us in this year's Speed Bump challenge. On to our final poll we go.
Coming into his 13th NFL season, Peyton Manning already is a man with few equals in NFL annals. Manning is just the fourth player in the game to have cracked 50,000 passing yards, trailing only Brett Favre, Dan Marino and John Elway. In 12 NFL seasons, the former University of Tennessee quarterback has averaged an amazing 4,177 yards passing per season and has never missed a start. He comes into 2010 at 19,000 yards behind Brett Favre (and making up slow ground until Favre retires but Manning is seven years Favre's junior). Manning has perhaps the deepest set of receivers he's ever played with, including Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon. Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark. While Manning certainly can compete with Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees at the top of the quarterback list, he'll earn his keep in this poll against Tony Romo and Matt Schaub.
Cowboys' Tony Romo is off a 4,483-yard season with 26 TDs and a career-best 97.6 QB rating. Had Romo not been injured in week 14 of 2008, where he was on pace for another 4,000 yard season, he would have three straight 4K years under his belt, with his best season in terms of TDs at 36 in 2007. Romo's 4,483 passing yards last year set the Cowboys single-season franchise record. Romo also gave Cowboys' fans their first playoff victory since 1996 and over the last three years has averaged 12.7 yards per completion, the most in the NFL over that timeframe. Romo has a truly elite set of receivers at his disposal including Miles Austin (who broke out last year for over 1300 yards and 11 TDs and a 16.3 yards per catch average), Dez Bryant, who we think is going to have a significant impact this season, Roy Williams, Jason Witten and Patrick Crayton.
Historically speaking, injuries have been the issue with Matt Schaub (he missed five games in 2007 and 2008 as the Texans' starting QB), but that was not the case in 2009 as Schaub started 16 games for the first in his career. In 2008 he averaged 277 yards per game (in 11 games) but he increased that to a truly elite 298 YPG in 2009 - his 4,770 passing yards were the 6th best single-season in NFL history. In fact, his 4,770 passing yards last year were more than Peyton Manning has ever had in the NFL (Manning's best season was 4,557 in 2004). Schaub's 2010 season is only eclipsed by Dan Marino and Drew Brees' historic 5,000 yard seasons, and career seasons by Kurt Warner, Tom Brady and Dan Fouts, each who topped the 4,800-yard mark. Schaub will be 29 to start the 2010 season and is in the prime of his career with perhaps the game's best wide receiver, Andre Johnson, at his disposal.
