Factoid
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I think pass protection is going to be a huge problem for Jay Cutler. The Bears don’t have much of an offensive line, and they’ve also handed over their offense to Mike Martz, whose system tends to allow a bunch of sacks anyway.
So far, that’s exactly how out it’s playing out.
Cutler has dropped back to pass 47 times, and he’s been sacked on 10 of those plays. Kamerion Wimbley of the Raiders sacked him 4 times in a half. That works out to over twice as often as almost every other starting quarterback
The numbers are below. Shown are quarterbacks who’ve attempted at least 25 passes and have a decent chance to potentially start on opening day. Numbers include pass attempts, sacks, and average number of pass plays per sack.

You have to think the Bears will fire Martz if Cutler is approaching 50 sacks. There's no way they want any part of David Carr's dubious record of 76 sacks in the '02 season. More intriguing to me is weather Cutler can make a serious run at the record for combined turnovers (interceptions + fumbles). It's a surprisingly hard stat to find but I think the record is George Blanda's 1962 season with 44. If he can toss in 10 fumbles (and getting sacked 4 times a game will help) then I think he gets it. Incidentally, the record for fumbles in a season is 23, shared by Kerry Collins and Duante Culpepper (2001 & 2002, respectively). If you're in a league that deducts 1 point per sack and 2 points per turnover then a conservative estimate is that Cutler is starting out in a 110 point hole (40 sacks + 35 turnovers). I feel that is a low estimate- if the over/under for points lost to sacks and turnovers was 120 I would take the over...assuming he starts 16 games.
