Around the NFL
Byron Leftwich's sprained MCL removes him from consideration to start Pittsburgh's season opener, making it seem that Dennis Dixon would get the nod. So it's surprising that one Steelers beat writer believes it will be Charlie Batch.
"Batch likely will lead the Steelers into their season opener," writes Ed Bouchette in today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. According to Bouchette, Batch will likely start with Dixon being used in spots to take advantage of his running ability, as was the plan had Byron Leftwich been the starter.
Mike Tomlin isn't saying, but there's enough uncertainty that owners who select Ben Roethlisberger and need a backup plan for the season's first four weeks should go with a backup that plays for a different team than Pittsburgh.
