I like the decision of the Rams to sign Josh Brown, and I think they got a good deal.
With the huge money getting tossed around – guards getting $7 million per year and question-mark wide receivers like Jerry Porter and Javon Walker getting $10 million and $16 million guaranteed, I don’t understand why Brown didn’t get more. His contract came in at $14.2 million for five years – just under $3 million per year.
That contract makes Brown the league’s highest-paid kicker. Previously, Adam Vinatieri was tops at $11.5 million for five years. But that contract was signed two years ago. The salary cap has risen significantly since that time. And Brown is a better kicker than Vinatieri.
Vinatieri may be better known than Brown, but the newest Ram is younger, just as accurate and has a much stronger leg. He’s much better on kickoffs, and he’s much better on long field goals.
Brown has hit a field goal from 54-plus yards in each of his five seasons in the pros. He’s got a howitzer for a league. Vinatieri, in contrast, has a below-average league. In the last five years, Vinatieri is 0-6 on field goals of 50-plus yards, while Brown is 13 of 22.
And as an added bonus, signing Brown creates a problem for a division rival. Nice signing for St. Louis.
