KC may have found a gem

Posted Mar. 11 at 08:53 PM

I’m working on the Kansas City team today. One guy who looks pretty good for them is second-year pass catcher Dwayne Bowe. He had a very solid rookie year, and they don’t really have much else at wide receiver. Tony Gonzalez is their other top pass catcher, and he’s 32.

Bowe has a rookie caught 70 passes for 995 yards and 5 TDs. The NFL went to a 16-game season in 1978. Since that time, 107 wide receivers have been selected in the first round. Of that group, only two – Terry Glenn and Michael Clayton – in their first years caught more passes than Bowe. And only five have finished with more yards.

The below chart shows all rookies (among first-round guys) who’ve exceeded 800 receiving yards in their first season. Most of those guys went on to become very good pros. Bowe doesn’t have much of a supporting cast around him right now, but it looks like he’s going to be good.

Yards
1313 Randy Moss (1998)
1193 Michael Clayton (2004)
1132 Terry Glenn (1996)
1039 Joey Galloway (1995)
1001 John Jefferson (1978)
995 Dwayne Bowe (2007)
976 Andre Johnson (2003)
942 Eddie Brown (1985)
927 Jerry Rice (1985)
924 Eddie Kennison (1996)
862 Shawn Collins (1989)
860 Louis Lipps (1984)
844 Keyshawn Johnson (1996)
843 Lee Evans (2004)
836 Marvin Harrison (1996)
836 Willie Gault (1983)
834 Jerry Butler (1979)
828 Derrick Alexander (1994)
824 Santonio Holmes (2006)
820 Andre Rison (1989)
818 James Lofton (1978)
817 Roy Williams (2004)

Bowe should be the main man. He may make his breakout season in year 2 in lieu of 3 with no one ahead of him. Bob M
