Just finishing up the first draft of the Kansas City story for the magazine.
The more I look at this team, the more certain I am that Kansas City would love to select Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long with the 5th pick in the draft.
Offensive line was a huge issue – the No. 1 problem – with this team last year. Kansas City allowed a league-high 55 sacks, ranked last in rushing and couldn’t punch out the tough yards when necessary (like at the goal-line or on third-and-one plays).
Kansas City had the league’s dominant running game a few years back, scoring 26, 32, 31 and 26 rushing touchdowns in one four-year span, the greatest in league history. But Willie Roaf and Will Shields have retired, and the other guys have gotten old. Kansas City actually finished behind the pass-happy Lions in rushing last season, and scored only 6 rushing TDs all year. Inside the 5-yard line, the team’s 14 rushing attempts resulted in a total of minus-1 rushing yard.
So I think Kansas City will be hoping for Long. If he’s not available, then maybe a trade down to get one of the other top blocking prospects, Ryan Clady from Boise State, Chris Williams from Vanderbilt or Jeff Otah of Pittsburgh. They definitely need blocking.
