Around the NFL
The Rams have hired Josh McDaniels as their new offensive coordinator, which obviously looks like a plus for quarterback Sam Bradford. The question is, will it also be a positive for Steven Jackson?
McDaniels' success with Matt Cassel in New England and Kyle Orton in Denver pretty much goes without saying; he got top-quality numbers out of passers previously considered marginal. But New England tended to use a committee at running back, and there were certainly elements of such an approach in Denver, with Knowshon Moreno, Correll Buckhalter, and other runners involved over the last two years.
But Moreno was hurt in parts of each of his first two seasons in Denver. Coming out of Denver's Week 9 bye last season, up until Moreno got hurt again in Week 15, McDaniels showed plenty of willingness to utilize a feature runner in his offense. That bodes well for Jackson continuing to carry a full workload in 2011. At his press conference yesterday, McDaniels confirmed he'll build the offense around his two stars.

Jackson will be 28 going into next season. He's also logged a lot of carries. Do you see him losing effectiveness in a year or two?

Oh sure. Maybe it's already begun. I think I mostly wanted to dispute any fears that McDaniels' history indicates the Rams would go with a committee at running back next season. I think it will be all Jackson until they determine he's very near the end of the line -- which may be by the middle or end of 2011. Not a guy I'd be looking to add in a dynasty league or anything.
