Seattle has signed free agent Olindo Mare to a two-year deal worth $3.5 million, according to an ESPN report by John Clayton. That move isn't going to work out. Mare is great on kickoffs, but he simply isn't accurate enough to be an NFL kicker.
And his iffy accuracy definitely isn't a match with the wind and weather that he'll get in Seattle. The guy isn't a good kicker.
Mare looked like an elite kicker in the 2000-2001 seasons, when he converted 47 of 52 field goals -- over 90 percent. But since that time, he's been under 80 percent in all but one of six seasons. He hit only 10 of 17 field goals last year, despite kicking in a dome for the Saints. Mare hit only 72 percent the previous season for the Dolphins -- dude can't kick.
No way the Seahawks should have signed him for anything more than the veteran minimum, to bring him in for an August looksie. They'll need to draft a kicker in the later rounds and hope he pans out.
