Around the NFL
The NFL and the Player's Association have tabled their labor discussions until Tuesday, and since neither side is talking, it's difficult to say if things are going well or not. The continued meetings, though, and scraps of information do suggest some progress.
Among other things, the NFL says the deadline for the old CBA to expire, March 3, could be extended. That's happened in the past, in order to give both sides more time to make a deal, and if it happens again this week, it indicates that they may be close to agreeing on the major issues.
On Thursday, the mediator released a statement saying "At bottom, some progress was made, but very strong differences remain on the all-important core issues that separate the parties." That doesn't sound overly promising, but he went on to say "I can report that throughout this extensive period the parties engaged in highly focused, constructive dialogue concerning a host of issues covering both economics and player-related conditions."
Basically: not much news. But those of us hoping for a quick resolution to the dispute can at least be reasonably optimistic that perhaps, things will be worked out in enough time to have a proper free agency before April's draft, and an offseason without a significant stoppage.
