Chris Henry is toast

Posted Apr. 03 at 09:40 AM

The Bengals released “troubled” wide receiver Chris Henry today, a day after allegations were made that he smashed a car windshield and punched an 18-year-old in the face.

Henry definitely has skills. He’s a tall, fast receiver who could be dominant if he set his mind to it. Carson Palmer last year said Henry would be a No. 1 receiver on most teams.

With T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson both angling for new contracts, and Johnson trying to shoot his way out of town, that made Henry an intriguing possibility for the 2008 season.

But Henry never seemed to be able to stay out of trouble for long. He was arrested four times between December of 2005 and June of 2006, leading him to be suspended twice by the league – once for eight games.

“Chris Henry has forfeited his opportunity to pursue a career with the Bengals. His conduct can no longer be tolerated,” said team president Mike Brown in a statement. “The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL. … But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team.”

Henry may be hit with a lengthy or indefinite suspension by the league. He may never be employed by an NFL team again.
