Vinatieri / 50-yard kicks

Posted Apr. 07 at 10:51 PM

Most overrated kicker in the league? Probably Adam Vinatieri. He hit a couple of big field goals to help New England win its first Super Bowl, but that was over six years ago.

Vinatieri has not been a special kicker since that time, and the Patriots, in hindsight, made the right choice in not getting involved in a bidding war for him when he became a free agent prior to the 2006 season.

As he's gotten older, Vinatieri has lost a little pop on his kickoffs, to the point where he's now managed to go five straight years without making a field goal from 50-plus yards. Considering how good kickers are today, that's unusual, particularly with Vinatieri being based in a dome.
