The Dolphins signed Josh McCown to a two-year contract, figuring he might be a bridge quarterback for them until the team is ready to hand the reigns over the John Beck – or another young quarterback the team might select in the early second round of the draft. Maybe Brian Brohm or Joe Flacco is their pick at that spot.
But if McCown is going to play quarterback for them, he’s going to have to start being more careful with the ball.
McCown last year handled the ball 233 times on rushing attempts and pass plays and fumbled 11 times. That’s a fumble per every 21 handles – worst in the league.
And McCown last year also threw interceptions on 5.8 percent of his pass attempts – 2nd-worst among all 41 quarterbacks who attempted at least 150 passes.
Granted, McCown was in a tough situation, playing on a lesser Oakland offense, but he’s got to pick up some of the blame for those turnovers as well. If he continues to throw interceptions and fumbles, he won’t stay on the field for long.
