Best (Foster) and Worst (Thomas) of goal-line runners

Posted Feb. 08 at 06:59 AM

The ball is on the 1-yard line and you need a touchdown. Which NFL player would you most like to have carrying it, and which one would you least like to hand it off to?

The best answer last year was arguably the league's best running back, Arian Foster. He carried the ball 4 times from the 1-yard line last year, and scored touchdowns on all of those attempts. At the other end of the spectrum, Dolphins rookie Daniel Thomas' numbers showed why he was quickly rendered an afterthought to Reggie Bush. Thomas also carried 4 times from the 1 last year, and didn't convert any of them.

Other fine choices: Cam Newton and LeSean McCoy, who each converted 5 of 7 attempts. Interestingly, only nine runners converted more than half of their attempts from the 1 last year, and the Super Bowl Champion Giants had two of them.

The numbers for all players who carried the ball at least 4 times from the 1-yard line last season are presented below.
