Bengals won't trade Johnson

Posted Apr. 22 at 09:49 AM

In the ‘90s, Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon tried to shoot their way out of Cincinnati without any success. No matter how much they trashed the team, asked for or demanded trades, the team declined to move them.

Based on a report by Chris Mortensen of ESPN this morning, it doesn’t look like anything has changed. Chad Johnson has been yelling for a trade for the entire offseason, to the point where it looks like it would be a major distraction to bring him back – too many bad blood. But the Bengals, Mort says, have declined a trade offer by Washington of a first-round pick, plus a 2009 third-rounder that could escalate to a first-rounder if Johnson makes a big impact.

Hard to believe. And if the Bengals aren’t taking that offer, then they must not be intending to move Johnson – that’s a very fair offer.

A pity. The deal would have been good for both teams. Plus it would have made Washington’s regular-season visit to Cincinnati a lot more interesting. (The three teams perhaps most interested in Johnson, by the way, all play Cincinnati this year – Washington, Dallas and Philadelphia.)
