There’s some good karma involved with the Seahawks using their seventh-round pick on kicker Brandon Coutu of Georgia.
When Seattle was looking for a kicker in 1991, it used a fourth-round pick on John Kasay, also from Georgia. Kasay went on to convert 81-plus percent of his field goals in three of four seasons with the team before signing a big free agent deal with Carolina.
And the Seahawks replaced Kasay with another kicker who attended Georgia: Todd Peterson. Drafted by the Giants but unable to find steady work, Peterson played pretty well in five seasons for Seattle, scoring 134, 111 and 109 points in his three best seasons.
The only other kicker drafted out of Georgia in the last 25 years also had a pretty good career: Kevin Butler of the Bears. When a team is in need for a kicker, it seems, it’s never a bad idea to go after a Bulldog.
The Seahawks say Coutu was the top kicker on their draft board. He hit 18 of 23 field goals last season, with a long of 52.
