Looking at lengths of WR touchdowns

Posted May. 03 at 12:41 AM

We’re doing more this year with scoring systems involving lengths of touchdowns.

Some leagues give substantial bonuses for touchdowns from longer distances, and we’re working to include that in our database. You’ll be able to punch in the parameters of your league, and our rankings will include flags and numbers in spots that will then cause guys to move up or down a few spots.

With that in mind, I’m looking at TD lengths a little more closely this year.

I always put together a chart showing average lengths of touchdowns for wide receivers each year. Below is a composite of the last three of those charts, showing the average length of touchdown catches for all wide receivers who’ve caught 15 or more touchdowns since 2005.

No surprise that Santana Moss is up at the top. He’s a deep-field burner, but he also doesn’t get many looks in the red zone, which helps keep that average way up. Kevin Curtis would be up there if not for being used in a different role in 2006, when the Rams deployed him as more of a slot guy.

The heavy red-zone specialists – Jurevicius, Fitzgerald, Holt, Houshmandzadeh and Ward – are all near the bottom.

I’ll use the below data to put the appropriate code numbers into our overall database. This should be a nice addition to our system.
