Career records of 2008 Experts Poll field

Posted May. 29 at 02:27 PM

I’m just putting the final touches on the Experts Poll stuff for the 2008 magazine.

This is the competition we started in 1991. Take the analysts who work on this stuff for a living, have them submit their top 20 at each position, and then grade all of those picks.

Dan Bakley of THE FANTASY POINT won the competition last year.

One of the things I’m doing now, however, is also keeping track of the all-time standings. That way, we can see not only who’s been hot recently, but which experts have the most impressive overall body of work.

Each year, each expert gets a “win-loss” record, based on how he fares against the others in the competition. Bakley, for example, went 24-0 last year for beating everyone in a 25-man field. He went 23-1 the previous season for finishing 2nd behind Scott Pianowski.

When you do this for every expert and every year, the current leaders (co-leaders) are Jon Millman of FANTASY FOOTBALL CHAMPS and Bob Henry of FOOTBALLGUYS.COM. Each has won two championships, and each has a win-loss percentage of .791. Millman isn’t participating in this year’s poll, so Henry will move past him if he finishes in the top 4 (out of 20). A few months back, I posted a blurb with an error, identifying David Dorey (THE HUDDLE) as the current leader, and I apologize for that – he’s actually percentage points back, in 3rd place.

On the below chart (which shows only guys who’ve participated at least four times), the guys listed in bold will participate in the 2008 poll. Some analysts have moved around and some companies have used different writers in the competition, so there are some company listings mixed in (preceded by an asterisk).
