Around the NFL
How the mighty have fallen. Cedric Benson, a No. 4 overall pick just three years ago, passed through waivers on Thursday, when no NFL team filed a claim for him.
Any NFL team could have picked up Benson on waivers. He would have been under contract for $890,000 for this year, but he could be released prior to opening day without any of that salary being paid. But no team was interested in that option, meaning Benson is now an unrestricted free agent.
It’s possible his next job could be in Canada. Or maybe he just retires to finish spending what’s left of the $14 million the Bears paid him. Maybe some team will change their mind on him and bring him in for a tryout this summer.
Mike Mulligan has the story in today’s Chicago Sun-Times.
