Training camp opens in three weeks, and Marques Colston is still playing under a pitiful contract he signed as a seventh-round draft pick two years ago. He would like a new contract. But The Times-Picayune says there’s no reason to worry; Colston should get an extension before opening day.
The team, according to writer Mike Triplett, is discussing a new deal with Colston, who caught 98 passes and 11 TDs last season. “Don’t panic … Saints fans,” Triplett writes. “I’ll be shocked if they don’t work (a) deal.”
Colston is definitely looking for a new contract. He’s slated to make only $445,000 this year, which is a pittance for one of the league’s best receivers. He skipped one of the team’s practices in June, perhaps out of protest. He’ll be a restricted free agent next spring.
But the Saints don’t have any other top-level wide receivers. They’ll likely do the right thing and give Colston a new contract.
