Here’s a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not type of factoid:
The Bears ranked last in kickoff returns last year.
Yes, last. Devin Hester returned two kickoffs for touchdowns – one against the Lions and one against the Broncos. But despite those two returns, the Bears averaged only 18.4 yards on kickoff returns, lower than each of the league’s other 31 teams.
Hester averaged only 21.7 yards on kickoff returns, which is a below-average number. Take out his 97- and 88-yard returns, and he drops down to 18.2. And when you factor in the poor returns by the other guys on the team, Chicago ranked last in kickoffs.
Weird. I’m not sure it really means anything – I think everyone would still love to land Hester as a kick return – but I thought I’d pass it along.
