Glazer: Packers will play hardball with Favre

Posted Jul. 11 at 04:49 PM

One of the big-time insiders – Jay Glazer of FOX – has some interesting info on the ongoing Brett Favre saga.

Favre, according to Glazer, had second thoughts just weeks after his retirement press conference in March. He told the team he wanted to come back during the NFL owners meeting. Team officials at that time said they would welcome him back, then Favre changed his mind again, Glazer says.

At that point, according to this report, the Packers decided to commit to Aaron Rodgers. And their days of coddling Favre appear to be over. Glazer says the Packers don’t intend to release Favre. Instead, they’ll try to get him to come back as a backup behind Rodgers. And if that doesn’t work out, perhaps they’ll trade him.

Glazer says they’re definitely not going to simply let him go, as he requested on Friday. That might result in the nightmare scenario of Favre helping Minnesota leapfrog Green Bay in the NFC North. Another division team, Chicago, also could make a play for the future Hall of Famer.

The Packers’ hard-line stance on Favre could bump him back towards retirement. Or he could report to the Packers, create what would surely be an uneasy and heavily scrutinized training camp. On the plus side (for the team), if Rodgers were to go down with an injury or to simply struggle, it sure would be nice to have No. 4 around.

Glazer’s story appears at msn.foxsports.com.
