A different way to look at kickers

Posted Jul. 16 at 04:15 PM

Here's another way to look at kicking production. Rather than looking at field goal accuracy or total points, it's a look at the portion of a team's offense that the kicker accounts for.

The Ravens, Jets, Browns and Cardinals, for example, have scored the highest percentages of their points on field goals and extra points, for example, over the last five years. San Diego, Kansas City, New England and Minnesota have tended to score the lowest ratios of their points by kickers - those teams, presumably, have scored more of their points on touchdowns.

Does it mean anything? I'm not certain that it does. But I spent some time putting it together, so I figured I'd pass it along to the group.

The statistical correlation between the % and the total ppg scored by kickers is actually -.175. This negative figure means that, if anything, a high % is more likely to tranlate into a LOW KPPG, though the -.175 figure is a (relatively) very very weak correlation. The numbers are interesting to see; however, just like Ian said, they may not mean anything. In this case, the only thing they mean is that one cannot assume that the % will translate into more KPPG.
