Experts League draft going on now

Posted Jul. 22 at 06:17 AM

It may not have the cache of the FanEx Football draft Ian Allan participated in over the summer, but it's got a better name. I'm currently in the midst of the Bum Phillips Texas BBQ Fantasy Experts League draft, an extended format draft that started yesterday morning and will probably run over the next two weeks.

Sponsored by JunkyardJake.com, the league features a dozen different fantasy experts and will be played out over the course of the season. A year ago I cruised through an 11-2 regular season on the strength of Tom Brady's 50 TD passes and other solid picks like Maurice Jones-Drew, Greg Jennings, and Plaxico Burress, then was upset in the playoffs with several key starters (including Brady) shutout by lousy weather in week 15. That's fantasy football.

This is a non-PPR league, whose major wrinkle is 6-point TD passes, giving quarterbacks extra value. Thus far, though, the three quarterbacks taken have gone about where they should go in any other league -- a contrast to another 6-point TD pass draft I was recently in where the top 4 quarterbacks (Brady, P.Manning, Brees, Romo) were shockingly drafted within the first 14 picks. Which just goes to show that no two drafts are alike.

In these drafts I typically start with Ian's rankings, then make minor adjustments based on personal preference or how I think the draft might go. So I took Marion Barber first at pick 1.06, hoping to get Maurice Jones-Drew or perhaps Peyton Manning in the second round. When both were taken a few picks before my selection, I grabbed our No. 3 wideout, Terrell Owens. My pick is coming up soon in the third round, and although the rankings would dictate taking one of our top 4 quarterbacks (if the last one is still there), the selection of two Cowboys in the first two rounds pretty much ensures I won't take Tony Romo even if he's available. Based on value, I'll probably take another wide receiver, then hope to get another runner and a quarterback with my next two picks.

The draft can be seen at this link.

The picks thus far are as follows (Fantasy Index picks in bold). I'll probably post updates every few days. Comments/criticisms? Bring 'em on.

My league also awards 6 pts for QB's TDs, yet is seems QBs are going much later in this draft than others. They appear to be drafted as if they only get 4 pts for TDs. Now I'm questioning if I should take Manning or Romo at my #2 pick (at #14 overall, #2 in the second round), or take my 2nd RB like I do almost every year. Comments?

In my draft above, Romo went at 3.05, so based on that you'll miss out on the top 4 QBs if you don't take a quarterback with your second pick. (Although who knows, maybe he or Brees will make it back to you.) For me it would come down to how much I liked the running back at 2.02. If it was a guy I had in the top 10, I'd probably take him. If not, I'd probably take Manning. Again using my draft as an example, given the running backs I'm looking at at the end of the third round, I might lean toward the runner in the second over the quarterback. Because I think I'd rather have that runner and a QB like Cutler or Roethlisberger than Manning and the runners I'm seeing being left when your next pick comes up. Not sure that answers your question; maybe you just need to decide if you'd rather have a lesser QB or a lesser No. 2 RB, because you'll likely have one or the other.
