Fantasy News
Fantasy Football Index senior writer Ian Allan will be on the radio today.
5:30 p.m. Eastern time (2:30 Pacific) with KJR 950-AM, Seattleās all-sports radio station. Probably about a 15-minute segment.
If you want to listen on-line, go to www.kjram.com. There probably will be a phone-in segment, and the station has a toll-free 800 number.

I'm sitting in Minnesota and I see on fantasyindex.com that Ian Allan is going to be on 950 KJR in Seattle. The Site says something about calling in for fantasy football talk. I call... nope we're not going to take calls on this segment. Ian is on the air for about five minutes and says Tom Brady is a good QB. Well, that was interesting. I told them the tattoo guy called and I have things to say and the site said to call this number. Oh well, My thoughts will have to go unsaid. I'm just kidding, but it was a build up that turned into a let down. I'll survive!

Sorry dude. I believe there will be call-in stuff on the future segments, and I think they'll be longer. The call-in stuff, however, might not start until the regular season. We'll see.

I shouldn't blab this stuff in front of the world, but because I don't have access to Ian's personal info, I have no choice, but to inform everyone what I'm thinking. I'm a Minnesota fantasy geek and I've seen what the proper radio coverage can do for fantasy football. Seattle has been known as a hot bed of fantasy football for a long time. FantasyIndex can take the credit for this! They have some problems as to the fantasy crowd. The local sports radio station should not wait until the season starts to have call ins. We need the info before the auctions and drafts take place. Minnesota radio starts their fantasy coverage August 2nd with two hours of fantasy talk and call ins. This is not the talk that tells you that Tomlinson is good! This is the kind of talk that discusses whether Courtney Taylor is going to be worth a toot! This is the time of the year where you have to be careful as to the info you listen to. If you're a marginal fantasy player you can be destroyed by listening to radio that is vanilla in there info. You win by hitting on a Courtney Taylor that has a big year. This means you got him cheap in an auction or you got him with a 8th round selection. Seattle radio is missing out on huge ratings at the time of the year that the fantasy fanatics are starting to rev their engines! They can ask KFAN radio of Minneapolis what the ratings do at this time of the year when fantasy football goes for a two hour show. I'd be willing to bet that Ian and the Index are being stepped on and held down by the radio powers that don't believe fantasy football would create enough revenue to have more coverage.

Having had my own (failed) fantasy sports radio program in a major market for a season, I can confirm that sports radio producers are generally fairly ignorant of fantasy sports, and only acknowledge it all because they feel an obligation to do what other guys are doing. Moreover, the "real" announcers at these stations, the ones who're paid to talk about real-life sports, typically look down their noses at the Fantasy Sports guy(s), who they see as unworthy, wanna-be nerds. Just as the sports guy may be the lowest guy on the totem pole at a major news station, so the Fantasy Guy is the lowest at an all-sports station. Could just be my own experience, but I'm betting it's fairly universal.
