Fantasy News
You hear a lot of bad color guys on the regular broadcasts during the season, but the exhibition games can be downright brutal. These are the guys, mostly former players, who aren't good enough to hook on with the national crews.
For this year, I'll try to jot down the worst two or three blurbs I hear each week. And readers are welcome to chime in with their votes; we'll make it a deal we'll track in August.
My No. 1 nominee so far is Edmund Nelson, who works for the Steelers crew. From the Philadelphia game:
"Correll Buckhalter is one of the best in the league at getting people off of him in space, and you see (Lawrence) Timmons just run him down and keep him to a 3-yard gain."
Correll Buckhalter? One of the best in the league?

There is nothing to be gained by watching preseason games. My favorite preseason games are ones in which my fantasy players are standing on the sidelines in street clothes. Sometimes, I will hold my breath for 5 minutes or so when my guys are on the field for a series, but then its time to go stare at the ceiling or do something else of equal productivity, rather than watch guys who will be released play against other guys who will be released. There is nothing exciting about watching a bunch of single-digit players catching touchdown passes.

I watch and can enjoy PS games....cause I love the game of football. The strategy, plays, keying on a player to see the position demands, the speed, the hitting. I like watching rookies trying to make the ballclub, the cheerleaders (Did you catch the Charger girl tonight picking pineapples?!), the sideline interviews. But often I don't mind muting the broadcasters either. I've been a Raider fan for over 30 years, and I can't stand listening to the Raider crew talk up players who has no business playing on my team.

I can't believe you have a problem with the Correll Buckhalter statement. That would qualify as HOF-calibur broadcasting commentary here in DC for our Red****s. Mike Patrick (yes, that Mike Patrick) credited London Fletcher (our starting MLB) with a special teams tackle in the second half (yeah, like he'd be out there in garbage time) and he and Theismann (ugh, sigh) totally botched the call on a play Dick Jauron had no problem diagnosing (without the benefit of 7 replays) and challenging successfully. I can't believe people were surprised ESPN got rid of them. The broadcast team is only marginally better than the George Michael/Jeff Bostic/Mike Wilbon trio we use to have. Well, at least Comcast's broadcast of the Skins is in HD, unlike all but a handful of our Nats' games.
