Around the NFL
Gene Upshaw died Wednesday night, just days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Upshaw was a Hall of Fame guard with the Raiders, and he’s been the head of the players’ union for the last 25 years. He won two Super Bowls and went to seven Pro Bowls.
His death comes at a pivotal time in owner-player relations. Owners opted out of the current collective bargaining agreement, meaning a season without a salary cap could occur in 2010. The NFLPA will have to elect a new representive to take Upshaw’s place.

A sad day as the NFL community lost a great former player. As NFLPA lead, he always stood up for his players. Whether or not that always sat well with everyone, he was respected.
