Around the NFL
Doesn't retirement mean anything anymore? At least this time it's a case of the team possibly paying somebody to play for them, as opposed to paying a guy to stay retired.
Giants star defensive end Osi Umenyiora is out for the year, and you can't easily replace a franchise pass rusher like that. Or can you? It's conceivable the Giants will consider bringing back Michael Strahan, and it's even more conceivable he'll say yes if they do. First Brett Favre, then Strahan. Warren Sapp apparently has a new gig doing commercials for NFL Sunday Ticket, but maybe he'll say yes too if some team comes calling.
We've dropped the Giants defense in our rankings in light of Umenyiora's absence, but we'll probably bump them back up a couple of spots if they bring back Strahan. The other options would be promoting a backup (a clear dropoff from Umenyiora regardless) -- probably Dave Tollefson -- or switching Mathias Kiwanuka from linebacker back to defensive end. That latter option, of course, would create a hole at linebacker. Whatever the Giants do should happen in the next few days, but you have to figure bringing back Strahan has some appeal.
