Fantasy Index leading MSNBC $100,000 Fantasy Challenge

Posted Sep. 07 at 10:59 PM

They’re running an interesting fantasy contest at NBC Sports. Each week you pick your optimum lineup – anybody you want on any team (with the catch that you can’t use anybody twice). So you’re trying to stick guys in on their best weeks. And the winner of the whole deal gets $100,000. I think there are some other prizes involved as well.

After week 1, I’ve got the high score of the 23,000-plus entries (at least so far; I suppose somebody might have a Monday night player in their lineup and sneak past me).

It’s been a goal of mine. Last year, I didn’t win any individual week and peaked at No. 9, then made some errors (namely, not being quick enough to use some franchise guys who later got hurt or cooled off). I think I finished at about 300th in the regular-season standings, then misfired with some key picks in the first-round of the playoffs (in this contest, it doesn't really matter where you finish in the qualifying session -- the top 1,000 contestents qualify to win the big prize, with the key round beginning in about week 12 or 13). Last year, as I recall, I opted to load up on Patriots for their Monday night game at Baltimore – figuring most of the other 1,000 qualifiers in the contest wouldn’t want to use them there, and that the Patriots might cool off due to poor weather in their closing games. New England did cool off in some of those final games, but they didn’t light up the Ravens defense like I expected.

For this first week, my key picks were Michael Turner and Willie Parker -- not "super duper" running backs, but they were clearly in very good matchups, and using them allowed me to save Westbrook, Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson. Also used Donovan McNabb, Jon Kitna, Plaxico Burress, DeSean Jackson, Calvin Johnson, Jason Witten and Jeff Reed.

And it’s not too late to join. Free contest, and you get to throw out your lowest score (maybe the lowest two scores, I haven’t looked at the rule book closely), so it’s certainly possible to join after week 1 and still win.

Nice work. Saw that this morning when looking how I ranked (500s) and wondered if it was really you. Rob F
