Kendrick vs. Beckham vexes me also. Having been clobbered in BA last year, I'm leary of too many free swingers and tantilizing cheap power sources (e.g. BJ, Pena, Bruce, Beckham, Montero, Blanks, et.al.) so I'd like to lean toward Kendrick. Expect that I can't be confident in him getting Full time AB's, and it's not like he's ever really arrived. I might chicken out and stick with Cano/Kinsler and Beckham and try to cover the BA with guys like Pujols, Ellsbury, Mauer, etc. If you're leaning Braun, that tells me you're not going Kemp. And if not Ellsbury, where are your Big Steals going to come from? BJ Upton is likely good for 50 SB, but at 600AB's of .260 average? If BJ does look like he's back, I won't wait too long to jump, but he's a pretty big gamble to start IMO. Regardless, I bet Heyward is 90% owned in week 1. Best of luck Justin.

Thanks for the luck, and back at you. I maybe should've been clearer in the OF section above; I'm not leaning to Braun OR Kemp and maybe not even Ellsbury. I certainly won't roster an OF above Ells and may not go any higher than B.J., who I suppose I have to roster or my mouth runs so far ahead of my money that I might as well not write these columns. Not sure on the big steals; I think it's smart to carry Reyes or Ells if you don't believe in the Morgan/Davis types, but Morgan has been running so frequently since he came back from the hamstring that I really think he's hellbent on making himself a star of a particular kind. One thing I've pretty much decided on is Kendrick over Beckham, playing for the Week 1 schedule and hoping at least some of this stuff (including the steals) works out on its own. I mean, if Kendrick is running somewhat often, and Ev Cabrera and Borbon are running like they should, and I've got at least one of Reyes/Ells/Morgan hanging around, I can limp by for a week or two until we see what's what. Pujols and Votto and Tulo and J.Upton and Cruz and Gonzalez should all run at least some, and even if I fall slightly behind this figures to be an easy year to catch up. Reyes, for one, will not be as widely owned as he should be. Nor will Ev, for that matter, unless I've missed my bet completely.

Another thing: Any player who hits the ball as hard as B.J. Upton is a good bet to hit better than .260 in a healthy season unless he strikes out like Mark Reynolds. B.J.'s career K rate is every 3.6 at-bats, not ideal but Reynolds' is 2.7. If he's right physically - and the spring numbers say he's right for now, anyway - I like him to do exactly what everyone expects from Kemp, minus 5 HR, plus 10 SB.

Andrus getting cortisone in the wrist (and batting 9th) right before OD might push me toward EvCab or Al Escobar. Conventional wisdom sez that SD is going to be running like mad to make some offense, but they're still not going to score a ton of runs. And that assumes EvCab is leading off; is that a given? FWIW, it appears that Alcides is going to bat 2nd at least part of the time, and would figure to score more runs. Decisions! Agreed BTW on BJ - it's just that I'm still stinging from last year......

I love Escobar as a real baseball player - if you told me exactly one of Andrus/Cabrera/Escobar would make the Hall of Fame I'd pick him - but I think either of the other two make better early-season fantasy bets, and that means Cabrera gets the nod if this news on Andrus means anything, right? Even if, as I suspect, he opens hitting 7th.

ALL: Just realized that I goofed by not writing up Shin-Soo Choo ($970), who has a fair chance of making my team. I still think Manny Acta will put the brakes on much of the running game, but it's hard not to let Choo run some after he went 21-for-23 a year ago. Figure he hits .290 with something like 24/12, which gives him a fair shot at both 100 RBI and 100 R hitting 3rd in Cleveland.

Wound up with this, if anyone wondered; you'll see I made a couple of concessions to the likely batting orders I've seen, and decided to ignore my voodoo-like bad feelings re a couple of SPs: C - J.Mauer M.Wieters (V.Martinez) / 1B - A.Pujols J.Votto / 2B - R.Cano B.Zobrist (I.Kinsler) / 3B - E.Longoria P.Sandoval (A.Ramirez) / SS - T.Tulowitzki E.Cabrera (J.Reyes) / OF - J.Hamilton J.Upton N.Cruz C.Quentin C.Gonzalez J.Borbon (B.Upton S.Choo) / DH - K.Morales J.Heyward / SP - T.Lincecum R.Halladay D.Haren Z.Greinke C.Carpenter J.Johnson (F.Hernandez A.Wainwright M.Cain C.Kershaw T.Hanson) / RP - B.Wagner F.Francisco R.Madson (A.Bailey) / SW - Y.Gallardo
