Around the NFL
If you’re interested in the impact that steroids has potentially had on the NFL, you’ll want to check out a story in The San Diego Union-Tribune. That paper, inspired by baseball’s Mitchell Report, has attempted to compile a comprehensive list of players and coaches who have been connected with performance-enhancing drugs.
I skimmed over the list. It looks pretty complete. I double-checked a few players that I knew served four-game suspensions, and they all appear to be listed. (Not that the paper has identified every NFL player who’s ever cheated – just the vast majority who have been publicized). The only kinda-omission I could find would be Terry Bradshaw; on the Dan Patrick radio show earlier this year, he said he used steroids in the ‘70s to recover from an injury.
The Chargers, with 19, are listed more than any other team. But there may be some home-field advantage there – with it being a San Diego newspaper, perhaps the writer had more information on that team. Of the other 31 teams, the Steelers appear to have the most listings.
