How far has Shaun Alexander slipped?
The Bengals, looking for depth at running back after placing DeDe Dorsey on injured reserve, skipped over Alexander and instead signed former Bear Cedric Benson on Tuesday. Cincinnati worked out Alexander in the offseason, and he’s from that part of the country – he grew up across the Ohio River in Kentucky.
The move was announced at the team’s official web site about 20 minutes ago.
Like Alexander, Benson has limited value (no value) on special teams and is a poor receiver. He’ll likely serve as the team’s No. 3 tailback behind Chris Perry and Kenny Watson. Watson missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury, while Perry has struggled this year, averaging only 2.9 yards per carry and fumbling 4 times.
In my opinion, Benson has essentially no fantasy value. I expect that Watson, not Benson, will be the next tailback the Bengals call on this season.
