Coughlin secretive on kicker

Posted Oct. 04 at 09:30 PM

I can understand a coach wanting to keep his cards close to his chest when disclosing who would start at quarterback for his team, particularly if one was an experienced pocket passer and the other was a mobile scrambler.

But why Tom Coughlin is being so secretive with his kickers, I have no idea. As of Saturday, he’s still not disclosing whether the team will go with Lawrence Tynes or John Carney on Sunday against Seattle.

“We will see on game day," Coughlin says in an article published today at NorthJersey.com, while conceding that he has an idea of whom it will be.

I don’t get it.

Those wanting to use Carney or Tynes are advised to check the inactive lists posted at NFL.com on Sunday morning. If one of the guys shows up there, the other, remaining kicker looks like a good bet to be a top-5 kicker this week.

Some players and coaches hold fantasy football enthusiasts in contempt. Years ago when I was a server at the Timberlodge Steakhouse in Eden Prairie, MN, Cris Carter came in with his wife and kids. It was late August and Robert Smith, Leroy Hoard and others were running for the Vikes. I honored his privacy until the end of the dinner and when I presented the check I casually asked who was getting the goal line carries in training camp. He looked up at me, eyebrows raised, and said, "Fantasy football, huh." And with a small exhaspirated smirk (and slight shake of the head) he ended the conversation. But what the hell, all the secretive chess moves and hidey widey makes our job as owners all the more interesting I guess.
