Around the NFL
Detroit Free Press columnist Drew Sharp thinks Detroit should trade Roy Williams. I agree.
The Lions aren’t going anywhere this season, and there’s no chance of Williams re-upping with the team next spring, when his contract expires. So why not exchange him for a second- or third-round pick right now?
The trade deadline is a week from tomorrow – October 14. Whether the Lions can entice any team to cough up even a third-round pick for Williams, however, remains to be seen. If I had Matt Millen’s old job, I’d be on the phone with the two franchises that were born in 1976 – Tampa Bay and Seattle. The Titans, Broncos, Saints and Dolphins are the other teams that might have some interest, but trades are rare in the NFL.
A change in scenery is what Williams needs. He’s clearly fed up with playing in Detroit. That was apparent on Sunday by the way he pouted on the field after a number of incomplete passes. He went out of his way to show everyone – fans, teammates and the TV audience – that a pass that bounced off his hands for an interception was thrown too far behind him.
In his column, Sharp also speculates that the Lions will insert youngster Drew Stanton in the starting lineup on October 26.
