Will there be a big deal before the October 14 trading deadline?
Carlos “Big C” Holmes of the Dayton Daily News indicates that the 49ers are sniffing around for a big-time receiver. He says San Francisco is has interest in T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Roy Williams. Both are receivers in the fnal years of their contracts. Both play for winless teams, and both are unlikely to be re-signed in the offseason.
Williams, of course, played for San Francisco offensive coordinator Mike Martz last year in Detroit, so he also knows that team’s offense and terminology.
A move to San Francisco would help Williams’ numbers, who’s currently floundering in Detroit. Houshmandzadeh, however, probably is better suited where he’s at (at least in terms of overall receiving numbers).
Holmes’ article can be found right here.

I can't say for a certainty that the 49ers wouldn't be interested in Houshmandzedah, given that Mike Nolan seems to have an attraction for anything coming out of the AFC Central, but I do recall that Mike Martz didn't exactly give ringing endorsements of Williams while in Detroit. Also, although Houshmandzedah's attributes could fit into what Martz requires of receivers, Williams is simply too large and massive to run as precise and crisp routes as that offense calls for. It wasn't simply a due to matchups that Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey caught such a large precentage of balls the two years Martz was there; they simply fit the profile better. I don't think Williams will land in San Francisco.
