Factoid
You frequently hear talk about teams being tougher at home and whatnot. Often times, the differences aren’t all that extreme.
But in the case of the Tampa Bay defense, it’s like a completely different unit.
Consider the numbers from the last two years (not counting a week 17 game from last year, in which the Bucs rested most of their regulars):
ROAD GAMES:
Win-loss record: 5-8
Points allowed per game: 20.5
Touchdowns: 28 (22 passing, 6 rushing)
Rushing Yards per game: 112
Passing Yards per game: 207
HOME GAMES:
Win-loss record: 11-1
Points allowed per game: 11.1
Touchdowns: 11 (7 passing, 4 rushing)
Rushing Yards per game: 91
Passing Yards per game: 167
Bottom line: Tampa Bay’s defense is one of the better ones in the league. But when you factor in the home-away difference, it’s not much more than an average defense on the road. So for this week (with the Bucs playing at Ford Field), fantasy leaguers might be able to have some success using Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith and Daunte Culpepper against this defense. Not that those are going to be the best players in the league at their positions, but they potentially could put up adequate stats.
