Using Passwords

Using Passwords to Access Bonus Fantasy Index Info

Because of the lead time required to print our magazines, and because we're just nice guys, we often make updated and extra information available over the Internet to our readers.

Typically, when you click on a link to some of that information, you'll bring up a page that has something on it like what you see below:

NOTE: This is an example from 1998 -- not the current, actual password

This information is password-protected for the readers of Fantasy Football Index.

Pressing on the link below will cause a box to appear asking for a user name and password.
The user name is guest
The password is the first word on page 80 of the 1998 edition of Fantasy Football Index.

NOTE: the password must be typed EXACTLY as it is printed in the magazine.
For example, if the password is football you must type football --not Football or FOOTBALL, etc.
And the "first word" or "last word" means just that--not the page number, page heading, magazine name or web address.

To find the password, get out your current copy of the magazine and turn to page 80.

For this password we want the first word on the page. On page 80 the first word is exceeded--not Running, as in the Running Back headline on the top of page. Noticed how the word is spelled, and whether it starts with a capital letter or a lower-case letter. This will be important.

So now you're ready to click on the link. You do, and this dialog box shows up:

The picture shown here is from running Netscape Navigator on a Macintosh, but the box you see should be basically the same.

So, remembering from that previous web page that the user name is guest you type in:

Notice that guest is typed in all lower-case letters. It must be entered exactly this way--not as Guest, or GUEST, or any other combination.

Now you're ready to type in the password. The same rules apply here--you must type in the word exactly as it is printed in the magazine. In this example, it is exceeded -- all lower case, no punctuation. When you type in the password, you won't see the letters; it will look like it does below:

You need to type carefully, since you won't know from looking at the screen if you've made a mistake. Now all you need to do is click the OK button, and the page you want should appear.

Once you've entered the password, you can go to other password protected pages on our site during the same session without having to enter the password again--as long as you don't quit your browser or log off the Internet.

PLEASE NOTICE that we try to change the password often. The reason for this is that we do this extra work so the people who buy and read our magazine will get more for their money, and hopefully want to keep buying and reading our magazine. Some unscrupulous types will post our password elsewhere on the Internet so unsrupulous cheapskates can get the info for free. We say, this is America, pal--if you want to work hard and give your labor away for free, move to North Korea. And be sure to pack a lunch.

If You're Not Getting the Pop-Up Box That Asks You for User Name and Password

If you're using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 and you're not getting the pop-up box asking for User Name and Password when you click on the link for the info (instead you get a page that says "401 - Bad Username or Password"), here's what you need to do:

If You Are Still Having Problems Getting Logged On

If you still can't get the page to come up, you may be using an incompatible (old) browser. Try downloading the latest versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. If you're an America Online user--first, our sympathies. AOL isn't the easiest way to use the World Wide Web. Second, make sure you have the latest version of the AOL software--you can download it for free (and with no time charges) while you're logged on there. See below for specific advice for America Online problems.

If when you type in guest it always comes out as GUEST trying hitting the caps lock button above the shift key on your keyboard.

I use America Online. I'm still having trouble logging on, even when I enter the right password.

You probably mis-typed the password when you first tried to log in, and now AOL is storing the error page instead of re-trying to log in.

Try this (at this writing, the current version of AOL is 5.0):

  1. Get off the error page. Try going to http://www.fantasyindex.com.
  2. Click on the "My AOL" button.
  3. Click on "Preferences."
  4. Click on the "WWW" button.
  5. Click on the "General" tab.
  6. Click on the button to clear your history.
  7. Under "Temporary Internet Files," click "Delete Files." Then click on the "Settings" button.
  8. Change the setting for "Check new versions of stored pages" to "Every time you start Internet Explorer."
  9. Save, and then quit America Online.
  10. Restart America Online and return to http://www.fantasyindex.com. Attempt to log in again. Be sure to read the log-in instructions carefully, and remember the password is case-sensitive.
