ASK THE EXPERTS appears weekly from training camp through Super Bowl with answers to a new question being posted Thursday morning. How the guest experts responded when we asked them: What should fantasy leagues do with Week 17?

JAMES SELTZER

I am a big believer that fantasy leagues should never play in Week 17. There is already enough randomness in the fantasy playoffs to begin with, there is no reason to add even more with all the meaningless Week 17 games. I think people should either take the last week off and just enjoy the NFL, or, create a DFS league for you and your league mates, and make it a winner take all (play for some small some of money) last week extravaganza. Either way, all the hard work you put into a fantasy team, all season long, should not be decided by a fluky Week 17.

Back in the day, my regular long-standing league played all 17 weeks. It wasn't that big a deal as we had larger rosters and scored manually, that is, no PCs or Internet. Additionally, the philosophies of NFL teams was to play every week, even if they had clinched titles or homefield. Now, it is standard procedure to play 16 week fantasy seasons instead, as the elite NFL teams with nothing to play for turtle during the last week to avoid injuries in advance of their playoffs. I like having a 17th week pool for the entire fantasy league, with a bit of wampum set aside from dues for 3 top winners. I like using existing rosters, or even picking new teams with a set budget like 1 week leagues have.

ALAN SATTERLEE

Well, I started playing fantasy football 25 years ago and we adopted initially the rules we read out of Miller Lite's "Handbook to Fantasy Football" which was on display in the summer of 1990. The scoring was a little crazy (and we adjusted over the years) but we still have the basic setup and I started another league with a similar design which is all-in total points with weekly winners and a final season Top 3. I feel like we had a FanDuel type of approach before FanDuel and I prefer my leagues designed this way more than head to head actually. So, Week 17 is just the final week of the season like any other week. I also play in plenty of head to head leagues. In one we have an all-in total points week for Week 17, which is fun but I don't really care winning that week really one way or not. So, I would say you could do an all-in Week 17 for a little extra side cash which is fine, or just enjoy Week 17 and perhaps prep for a playoff league which we do too and it is super fun.

The week has some value — it’s always fun to play — but I don’t want to see a championship game in a season-long competition spoiled because too many key players are being held out. So when utilizing Week 17, best to treat it separately. If you’re in a league that drafts players, one option would be to have each of the 12 owners put together a Week 17 lineup. Highest score in that week then gets first choice of where he would like to draft in 2015.

I play Daily Fantasy for the final week of the year but otherwise I say just watch the games and not worry about players!

SAM HENDRICKS

No Super Bowl; too much of a chance that a team sits players to save them for the NFL playoffs. Best idea is a completely new Week 17 contest for the league where anyone can pick any players in a total score competition. This is also a perfect time to try something different in terms of scoring or roster rules as a test balloon for next season. For example, dual flex, 1.5 PPR for TE or start 2 QB rules.

You should ignore it and enjoy the games. Fantasy Bowls are meant to be played strictly in Week 16.

ANDY RICHARDSON

I would like to do something with this week but haven't found a good solution. It shouldn't be part of the regular league, and it's hard getting something new set up because it's usually right during the holidays and no one can be bothered. My best answer is just to sit back and enjoy the games with no fantasy ramifications whatsoever -- like we all used to do back in the day.

Richardson has been a contributor and editor to the Fantasy Football Index magazine and www.fantasyindex.com since 2002. His responsibilities include team defense and IDP projections and various site features, and he has run the magazine's annual experts draft and auction leagues since their inception. He previews all the NFL games on Saturdays and writes a wrap-up column on Mondays during the NFL season.
