The NFL has altered the extra point. It’s moving them back to the 15-yard line, meaning they’ll be like a 32- or 33-yard field goal. They’ll re-assess this rule at the end of the season (then likely keep it for future years). I posted some numbers last week in which I speculated the success rate would be about 95-96 percent.

I think it’s a good rule. It will help separate the talent at kicker a little bit. We’ll start seeing the lesser guys miss some of those kicks, and it will be clearer who can really kicks. It increases the importance of a good kicker.

I just wish they were kicking 40-yarders so we could really see the difference between these guys.

I don’t have the time to individually audit all of these kickers, but here are the 30-39 yard field goal numbers for the last four years. These field goals are a little harder than what the extra points will be, with plenty of kicks of 37, 38 and 39 yards mixed in there.

But you get the idea.

Shayne Graham, by the way, is tops on the list but just got cut by New Orleans on Tuesday.
