Recently we ran an item about veteran Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, noting that there are some signs he could be pretty good in New York, given his play at times in the past and particularly in Chan Gailey's offense. But first he'll need to be better than Geno Smith, and that's something we can't promise too assuredly.

Smith played fairly well down the stretch last season, and he appears to have a fan in Ron Jaworski. “I see a nice growth every single year in Geno and I like the future of the Jets with Geno Smith at quarterback,” says Jaworski.

Those conflicting endorsements (New York traded for Fitzpatrick, after all) are a reminder that you can't get too high on either Jets passer. Probably both will start some games this season.

But it's a promising pair of wideouts in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, and some decent candidates for a No. 3 target in Jeremy Kerley and second-year tight end Jace Amaro. The running game has some viable players in Chris Ivory, Zac Stacy and Stevan Ridley. The offense could be decent.

No one is likely to make any special effort to draft a Jets quarterback -- not even if it's clear in August which one will be the opening day starter. But there's at least some spot start potential there. Particularly if Smith does win the job, since he's got some running ability.

Just another of the myriad camp battles to keep an eye on in the preseason.
