Game on. Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets have finally ended their stalemate. He’s agreed to a one-year deal worth $12 million plus incentives, and that puts New York back in play for serviceable passing numbers.

Fitzpatrick ain’t Superman. When he was a free agent, no other teams had much of an interest in signing him, and there were others with needs at the position – Broncos, Eagles, Browns.

But Fitzpatrick is experienced and isn’t shy about chucking it around, and Chan Gailey has a way with quarterbacks. In the past he’s gotten top-10 (per-game) numbers out of guys like Tyler Thigpen, Jay Fiedler and Kordell Stewart.

Fitzpatrick was a middle-of-the-pack quarterback last year, with 31 TD passes and an average of 244 passing yards per game. If you set aside the Oakland game (which he left very early with an injury) he was a top-10 quarterback.

There were 27 quarterbacks last year who started at least 10 games. Of that group, Fitzpatrick came in 15th in per-game productivity. That’s standard scoring.

Maybe they would have gotten something similar out of Geno Smith, but now they look like a safer choice to get serviceable quarterback play.

This helps out the wide receivers on the team. They’re safer choices now that Fitzpatrick has committed to coming back. On that front, Brandon Marshall is down to 224 pounds. That’s a good thing. He played at over 230 last year. he should be a little faster this season.
