Let me catch up on the Fanex Analysis Draft. Here are the capsules on the five guys I have chosen since I last checked in:

10.07 TE Eric Ebron: I was hoping to select Zach Ertz, who put up huge numbers in the second half of last year, but he went in the ninth. Ebron has dropped too many passes in his first three years, but he hasn’t been terrible. He averaged 4.7 catches and 55 yards last year. Now Anquan Boldin is gone, and I’m thinking Ebron will pick up some of that role. Hopefully he’ll be used more in the red zone. (Boldin caught 8 TDs last year, while Ebron caught only 2). Boldin is a wide receiver while Ebron is a tight end, but they have similar body types and can run the same kind of routes.

11.06 TE Hunter Henry: I’m not totally sold on Ebron (who’s also had some injuries), so I’m selecting a second quality tight end. If Antonio Gates wasn’t coming back for yet another season, Henry would be a top-4 tight end on my board. He’s a lot younger and better than Gates, and I’m figuring they’ll start using him a lot more this year. Last year there was the dynamic where they were trying to force balls to Gates around the goal line to get him the all-time touchdown record. That won’t be the case this year.

12.01 RB Rob Kelley: This is the pick obtained in the Rob Gronkowski trade (I traded 3rd- and 4th-round picks with Matt Schauf, and to get that deal done, he gave me this choice in exchange for 13.06). I have only two running backs, so I need a third. Kelley, I think, will be Washington’s best running back. Chris Thompson will play on third downs, catching 40-50 balls. They drafted Samaje Perine. But I think Kelley is better than Perine. I liked the way he played last year after replacing Matt Jones. Kelley averaged 67 yards rushing in the nine games he started, with 6 TDs.

12.07 WR Josh Doctson: There aren’t many good wide receivers left, so I wanted to add my 6th player at this position. This is a PPR format, and I’ll be using four players at this position most weeks (one in the flex). Washington put two wide receivers over 1,000 yards last year, and they’re both gone (DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon). Doctson should now fill one of those spots and presumably make that kind of an impact. I just wish he was a safer choice. He hasn’t shown he can do it yet. He was rotating with Ryan Grant at the OTAs. I had Sterling Shepard queued up for this pick, but he went at 12.06. In hindsight, a safer, smarter choice might have been to go with Will Fuller, who’ll definitely be starting for Houston and might be better anyway.

14.07 PK Stephen Gostkowski: In past years, the first kicker chosen in this draft has usually gone about here. To me, Gostkowski is a clear notch better than the other players at this position. The Patriots look like they’re going to mow through the league again this year, and they tend to get him on the field often. Gostkowski has scored over 150 points five times. All other active kickers combined have reached that level only four times. So I’m figuring he’ll give me about a 30-point edge against a lot of the other teams at this position. This is a no-moves league, so teams don’t have the luxury of using the waiver wire to replace kickers who are struggling or who get released.

This draft is ongoing; we’re over 70 percent of the way through. If you want to see the capsules the other participants have submitted with their picks, they can be seen at the Fanex page on MyFantasyLeague.com.
