Question

What former quarterback coined the phrase "alley-oop"? He was a notable player for two franchises, and they play against each other today.

Answer

Y.A. Tittle, who had success throwing lob passes to 6-foot-3 wide receiver R.C. Owens for the 49ers in 1957. Tittle was later traded to the Giants, where he had seasons with 33 and 36 touchdown passes (in 14-game seasons). His 36 TD passes is still a team record for that franchise. Tittle died last year, just short of his 91st birthday. The alley-oop pass later become popular in basketball.
