The NFL has legislated away kickoff return touchdowns to a striking degree. There have been just 34 total in the last five seasons; no more than 7 in any of those years. There were 23 in 2010 alone; that's how great a drop there's been. Not coincidentally, kickoffs were moved from the 30-yard-line to the 35 in March 2011.

Such touchdowns are rare enough that it's not the kind of thing you want to build too heavily into your fantasy rankings. But a slight bump for teams more likely to bring a kickoff back for a touchdown than others, so you can now move the New England Patriots to the head of that list.

New England swung a trade for Oakland's Cordarrelle Patterson yesterday. Patterson spent the first four years of his career with the Vikings, and he returned 5 kickoffs for touchdowns in those years. That's 1 more than any other team, even with Patterson in Oakland last season, and 3 more than all but three teams.

Patterson, in fact, has a chance to make a run at the all-time record for kickoff return touchdowns. Considering the other top guys were mostly operating during a more kickoff-friendly era of the NFL, that's impressive. Just 3 more TDs, and he'll tie Josh Cribbs and Leon Washington for the career lead. (Active players in bold.)

The way the league is nowadays, Patterson will need to handle kick returns for several more years to catch Cribbs and Washington. But maybe.
