I see that Adam Humphries has signed his tender. He’s remaining with the Bucs, and I think he’s a notable player.

Humphries has played well there. Well enough that the Bucs tendered him at $2.9 million. That’s the same level the Bears declined to go to with Cameron Meredith, clearing the way for New Orleans to swoop in and steal him without compensation. Unlike Chicago, Tampa Bay wasn’t willing to risk tending Humphries down at the $1.9 million level.

Whether the Bucs could have gotten away with tendering Humphries down at $1.9 million can be debated. I don’t they could have pulled it off. He’s been a good slot receiver the last two years, and I imagine that would have interested a number of other teams. He can also return punts.

I’m not going to draft Humphries in any fantasy leagues. I don’t think he’s going to catch enough passes or touchdowns. Of the 143 passes he’s caught over the last three years, only 4 have gone for touchdowns. Of the 75 wide receivers with at least 100 catches since 2015, that ranks last – 2.7 percent of his catches go for touchdowns.

But Humphries is notable in that I think they’ll leave him in that slot role. The Bucs also have Chris Godwin, and I think Godwin some day will be a good, productive NFL starter. But it will be tough for Godwin to get on the field much this year. They’ve also got Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson, and those guys are starting. (Jackson didn’t do much last year, but they’re not giving up on him). They also have a pair of notable tight ends, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate.

Godwin had two really good games at the end of last season, when Jackson was hurt, but I don’t think he’s going to have much of a role. Those in dynasty leagues can stash away Godwin and wait for him to develop, but he might not provide much this year. Best hope there is probably that Jackson pulls a hamstring or something.

As for Humphries, he’s a solid slot. There were 50 wide receivers last year who saw at least 80 targets. Of that group, only one player (Golden Tate) caught a higher percentage of the passes thrown his way.
