Question

The Colts and Jets play today. These teams famously met in Super Bowl III, and two years later were placed in the same division. What are the only other three pairs of teams that during the Super Bowl era have both played against each other in a Super Bowl and spent time in the same division? (Note: in 1966, the NFL divided teams into 8- and 7-team groups, but they were conferences rather than divisions.)

Answer

Seahawks-Broncos are the easiest pair; they spent years together in the AFC West. Raiders-Bucs is the trickiest; when the Bucs went 0-14 in 1976, it was as members of the AFC West. And going way back, Steelers-Cardinals spent the 1967-69 seasons together in the Century Division (prior to the merger, the three other NFL divisions included the Capitol, Coastal and Central – all four starting with the letter C).
