If you’re in a dynasty league, at what point do you give up on older quarterbacks like Eli Manning, Alex Smith and Joe Flacco? They are currently starters, but it looks safe to say that none of them will ever be a top-15 quarterback in another season.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is even harder to grade. I don’t think he has any significant value for 2019 and beyond, but he’s at least a contender to put up top-5 numbers during the second half of this season, and that’s worth something.
With the declining old veterans, I think it makes sense at this point to slot them behind a number of young quarterbacks that won’t necessarily ever amount to anything, but at least have some chance of developing into something. I’ve got Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Teddy Bridgewater, for example, ahead of all of the stodgy old vets. With Jackson and Allen, neither looks anything like an NFL passer yet, but both are really good runners. With Jackson in particular, I think he could have a season where he puts up bottom-5 passing numbers but runs for enough yards and touchdowns to maybe finish with top-10 overall numbers. Most fantasy scoring systems tend to be biased in favor of rushing production.
With Bridgewater, he looked kind of decent with the Jets in the preseason. Drew Brees is 39, and if he were to retire, Bridgewater might be there to step in and take over one of the league’s best offenses.
My current top 50 quarterbacks for dynasty leagues appears below. Assumes standard scoring, and assumes teams are allowed to keep players indefinitely. Rookies tagged with black dots.
I hit one of these each weekend. I posted wide receivers last week. Coming up next week will be running backs.
