Seahawks bring back veteran LB Wagner

The Seattle Seahawks signed veteran linebacker BOBBY WAGNER to a one-year, $7 million contract over the weekend. Wagner is one of the team’s most iconic, influential, and best players in franchiseMore history. The Seahawks hope that Wagner, who turns 33 in June, is still the same player he was during the first decade with Seattle. Wagner will be counted on to fill in at middle linebacker for as long as it takes JORDYN BROOKS to recover from an ACL injury suffered on January 1st. Less

Factoid: Bobby Wagner

The Seahawks signed Bobby Wagner to a one-year contract yesterday, a year after saying goodbye (and watching him sign with division-rival Rams). Maybe they regretted parting ways in the first place, or maybe it was because the guy who replaced him, Jordyn Brooks, tore his ACL in Week 17, and should be considered uncertain for the start of the season.   more »

Baltimore upgrades defense, acquires LB Smith from Bears

The Baltimore Ravens have reportedly acquired inside linebacker ROQUAN SMITH from the Chicago Bears, upgrading the defense ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Smith, 25, is one of the best insideMore linebackers in the league and will make a fearsome duo along with fellow defender PATRICK QUEEN. Smith leads the NFL with 83 tackles this season, and only BOBBY WAGNER has more tackles than him over the past five seasons. Smith was the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Less

Defensive Notes: Ultra-productive linebackers

It's never a total shock when veteran players coming off injury are released, but the Giants cutting starting middle linebacker Blake Martinez yesterday was surprising. The team cut down to 53 players on Tuesday and kept him then, and they don't really have a proven replacement. But the NFL's 3rd-leading tackler as recently as 2020 is on the street.   more »

Defensive Notes: Bobby Wagner

I'm not sure if Seattle is tanking this season, going into the season (apparently) with just Geno Smith and Drew Lock at quarterback. But an argument can be made that Seattle is definitely focused on the future rather than the present by their release of Bobby Wagner.   more »

Defensive Notes: Bobby Wagner

I'm uncertain how high to rank Bobby Wagner in the 2022 IDP rankings. On the one hand, he turns 32 next month and Seattle evidently feels his best football is behind him; they released him. There's the uncertainty of him now joining a new team. On the other hand, a step slower or no, he's still awfully productive.   more »

Around the NFL: Bobby Wagner

People who scoff at the salary cap will feel justified by what the Rams have been able to do. Loaded with stars and tight against the cap at the start of the offseason, they've been able to hand out two of the larger contracts of free agency. First to Allen Robinson, and now to Bobby Wagner.   more »

Seattle linebacker says defense not rebuilding

Seattle linebacker BOBBY WAGNER doesn’t view the 2018 season as a rebuilding year for the Seahawks defense. Despite losing key players such as CB RICHARD SHERMAN, DE MICHAEL BENNETT, DT SHELDON RICHARDSON, and DE CLIFF AVRIL, Wagner thinks people are sleeping on a talented Seattle defense.

Andy Richardson: IDP Playoff ReDrafter

A reader asked for a Playoff ReDrafter of Individual Defensive Players. It's a lower percentage of readers who use IDPs, but I thought it was worthwhile anyway. If you want to bump up your playoff competitions with a larger player pool, maybe consider including a few defenders and seeing how things go.   more »
