Factoid: Top pass rushes

Last year's Eagles defense, led by Haason Reddick (pictured), had one of the best seasons for sacks since the stat has been recorded -- 70. Only two teams have had more: the 1984 Chicago Bears, and the 1989 Minnesota Vikings. A repeat of anything close to that total is very unlikely.   more »

Factoid: Jonathan Gannon

The Arizona Cardinals have hired Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as their next head coach. It's a move that hasn't earned a lot of positive press, largely because of how small the Eagles defense came up in the Super Bowl. What have you done for me lately?  more »

Factoid: The Patriot Way

Tom Brady won a Super Bowl in his first season without Bill Belichick, while Belichick hasn't come close without Brady. It's debatable whether New England has its quarterback, and a lot of other offensive draft picks haven't panned out. But no one would question Belichick's defensive acumen.   more »

Factoid: Top pass rushes

It was a big year for pass rushes, with four defenses -- Philadelphia, Dallas, New England and Kansas City -- recording over 50 sacks. That's happened only two other times this century (granted, 17-game season now). The question is how those defenses might perform in 2023.   more »

Defensive Notes: Eyes on Texas for Defense

As games get more critical, defense and kicker choices become (or at least seem) more important. If you have a big game this week, you're pretty happy if the defense you have starting is the Dallas Cowboys.   more »

Defensive Notes: Fantasy Defenses, first four games

More so than with any other position, streaming defenses makes a lot of sense to me. Fantasy teams typically only roster one of them (occasionally two), leaving lots of good choices available on waivers each week. So I like to look which ones get schedule advantages at different points.   more »

Defensive Notes: Kansas City

With the Kansas City defense, it's long been one to select for fans of the home run. If you want to plunk away with sack totals, for example, the numbers probably won't be there -- it's ranked 19th or worse in sacks in four of the last six year. But big plays (takeaways, and especially touchdowns) have been a strength.   more »

Defensive Notes: Dubious about Darius

Darius Leonard is one of the best individual defensive players, and he's a large factor in any favorable ranking of the Colts Defense, too. That's why there's ample reason for concern about his health as training camp approaches.   more »

Around the NFL: Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have signed Stephon Gilmore, and I'm more and more intrigued by their defense this season. Gilmore is 31 years old and has missed 5 and 9 games the last two seasons, but he looks like another solid component for what should be a really good fantasy defense.   more »

Defensive Notes: Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys led the league in interceptions a year ago, helping them finish as one of the top (if not the top) fantasy defenses in most sack- and takeaway-based scoring systems. But it's tough to repeat, and a downturn is probably coming.   more »

Factoid: Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are kind of a train wreck, with their owner a key figure in the Brian Flores lawsuit for hiring/firing practices and allegedly offering financial incentives to lose, and major questions at quarterback and running back, among others. It's not a team that inspires excitement in fantasy leagues.   more »

Factoid: Steelers Defense

The Steelers Defense will be an interesting group to slot for 2022, in fantasy terms. It was this year, too, with it clear there were some age and personnel issues, especially in the secondary. With Ben Roethlisberger retiring, the team itself could be headed for a steep decline.   more »

Factoid: Patriots Defense

So the Bills beat the living snot out of the Patriots yesterday, and a major takeaway was the total ineffectiveness of New England's defense. It didn't sack Josh Allen, and it didn't record any takeaways. Outside of Buffalo, few saw such a dominant performance from their offense coming. But more probably should have.   more »

Defensive Notes: Fantasy Defenses, Next Four Games

There are four games left in the NFL season, and just three -- or two, or one -- left for most fantasy coaches. Some play total points through Week 18, some through Week 17, and some are part of a playoff field where they might be about to play their final game or two. A look at defenses in those games.   more »
