Around the NFL: Irv Smith
The Bengals signed tight end Irv Smith the other day, and there's some potential there. Hayden Hurst is gone to Carolina, so Cincinnati has an opening for a starter. And Smith, who was drafted in the second round four years ago, has the athleticism to make an impact as a receiver. more »

Vikings bringing TE Smith back slowly from injury
Minnesota Vikings tight end IRV SMITH suffered a season ending knee injury before the season even got started in 2021. Head coach Kevin O’Connell said this week that the team wants… More to have Smith back and fully healthy by training camp, but the focus for now is learning the playbook. O’Connell added that the team does not want to push Smith early in the offseason, instead the Vikings will await the green light from the doctors. Less

Around the NFL: Minnesota tight ends
Irv Smith had seemed like a potential sleeper tight end all offseason, with Kyle Rudolph gone from the Vikings. But now it's not certain Smith will play at all this season, and the Vikings' trade for Chris Herndon yesterday highlights that. Is there value in the situation? more »

Around the NFL: Irv Smith
I'm not sure how I feel about the Minnesota tight ends this year. Kyle Rudolph is gone, setting up a possible breakout player in 2019 second-rounder Irv Smith. The problem is that it's a two-tight end offense, and Smith's own coach has downplayed the idea of the youngster seeing a greatly expanded role. more »

The Irv Smith-Kyle Rudolph tandem is the latest example. more »

Factoid: Irv Smith Jr.
I have some interest in Irv Smith. He’s not as heralded as the other second-year tight ends (T.J. Hockenson, Noah Fant) but he has some of the same selling points. more »

Around the NFL: Vikings sign Rudolph
Things seemed so different as we were finishing up the magazine last week. Contract-year tight end Kyle Rudolph was likely headed out of Minnesota, maybe by trade or release, freeing up second-rounder Irv Smith to have sleeper potential at tight end. Well, nope. more »

Around the NFL: Rudolph on the move
Kyle Rudolph is on the trading block, and it looks like he’ll be moved sooner rather than later. The Vikings probably would like to get something for him before his contract expires at the end of the season, and they’re also squeeze up against the salary cap. Moving Rudolph would get them a little wiggle room. more »
